Awesome Sintra

The town is a UNESCO heritage site and the sights there are mind boggling - at least my mind was boggled! There's a 9th century castle way up on the mountain with walls and steps to rival China's Great Wall. Half-way down the mountain there's a "folly" summer home built in the mid 18th century in Moorish style for the kings of Portugal. The architect must have attended to every whim of his client! the various turrets reminded me of some of Gaudi's buildings. Then, in the center of the old town is the #1 on the DK Guide to Sentra - The National Palace that's been a national monument ever since the last king of Portugal was overthrown in 1910. The food must have been great judging by the twin chimneys in the kitchen which are a landmark from miles around.

I must have 100 photos from the day - perhaps you are in luck that I can't bore you with them right now!
